It's official - we are volunteering with Get About Columbia on Saturday. I know most of you have probably heard that nice little jingle on the radio - "when you get about Columbia.." Well, yes it is a real organization!

What are we going to do, you ask. We are going to help them evaluate sidewalks throughout downtown Columbia to help improve the safety of walking downtown. So many of us walk downtown all the time - Get About Columbia wants to make it safer for all of us to bike and walk there.

When should you show up? The event begins at 9 a.m. (Yes, I know this is a little early for a Saturday morning - but you can do it!) We'll go to the Get About Columbia office downtown for a little training and then hit the streets! The event should be over by noon or 1 p.m. - depending on how quickly you move!

Don't forget to dress for the weather as we'll be outside!

Beyond November 4

Today is Election Day, and we’re not the first to tell you to get out and vote. But we do want to encourage you to keep up that civic spirit on November 5 and 6 and 7, etc. Voting enables us to have a voice, to make a difference in our community and our country -- so does volunteering.

From the City of Columbia’s Office of Volunteer Services newsletter:

The results are in! In the city's 2008 fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2007-Sept. 20, 2008), volunteers shared 43,228 hours with the City of Columbia valued at more than $843,000. More than 6,000 volunteers assisted the city in nearly every department. Thank you for sharing your most valuable resource - your time - to improve Columbia.

We more than doubled the amount of people from our September event.

We are going to one of the local Salvation Army stores and to help them sort donations! This could involve folding clothes, sorting through boxes...who knows, you could find something crazy!

Service on Saturday: Making a difference, one weekend at a time

Service on Saturday (SOS) is an organization for Mizzou students, by Mizzou students, enabling us to make a difference in our community. SOS believes you only need a few hours to make a positive change, and Saturday is the perfect time to do it. We offer one service opportunity each month, at a variety of locations in the community.

This month, we're getting out there to serve Columbia on October 11 (yes, this Saturday). We know it's game day, but we'll be done far before that. Meet outside A022 Brady (the basement) at 9:30. If you show up on time, we'll have a bagel or two for you. We'll head out to our service site soon after. We'll be finished by 11:30.

This is a great opportunity for campus organizations, sororities, fraternities, FIGs, those needing service hours for class or anyone who wants to make a difference and have a good time too. Service chairs, this is your dream – there's nothing for you to coordinate! Just tell your members when to arrive. We've planned all the details for you. No registration, no forms to fill out. All you need to do is show up Saturday morning – it couldn't be simpler.

Hinkson Creek. Check.

We worked with the Missouri Stream Team on Saturday cleaning up the Hinkson Creek near the MKT.

Hinkson Clean Sweep

Our first event is THIS Saturday September 27!!

Time: 10 am-noon. Meet in downstairs Brady Commons (by the doors of A022) around 9:30 am, we'll be leaving at 9:45 am.

Location: Flat Branch Tributary to Hinkson Creek: Along the MKT Trail
at Martin Luther King Memorial on Stadium. Meet at the trailhead
parking lot.

Instructions:
Wear sturdy shoes that will get wet and dress appropriately.
Signs will be posted near the sites.
They'll provide all the supplies, pizza and drinks after the cleanup.
There will also be prizes for the weirdest trash!

Please come out and join us for this great volunteering opportunity! It'll be a blast!

First Blog Post Ever!

New school year = new opportunities to help out your community!

Our first Service on Saturdays event is going to take place next Saturday (September 27). We will help clean up Hinkson Creek! More info will be coming very soon on times and places!

If you want to volunteer, but can't make it on Saturday, here is another volunteer opportunity we wanted you to know about:

Columbia Festival of the Arts is looking for a group of students (about 10) on Friday evening, Sept. 26 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to help set up the stages and to help the visiting artists set up their booths. The close proximity of Downtown Courthouse Square to MU campus makes this a great venue for MU students to volunteer. Please contact Debra Hardin (DDH@GoColumbiaMO.com) if you're interested!
